The micro perforated heat shield

In 1999 we developed the micro perforated heat shield. It was our intention to transfer an unknown principle of the sound absorption, the sound absorbing effect of small holes, to heat shields.

We are using the installation space between heat shield and body application for the necessary resonating body (double function), which is a special feature of our invention.

The absorption of the micro perforation is similar to the principle of the Helmholtz resonator. In addition to that, the inner friction within the absorption holes is destroying the sound. The absorption field is a function of the resonating body, diameter-, distance- and shape of the holes as well as the thickness of the material.

Advantages:

  • mechanically, fixed surface
  • heat-resistant surface
  • parts, without absorption, can be provided with absorption
  • absorption with low frequency (mostly required)
  • calculable absorption
  • material saving
  • reduced weight

Disadvantages:

·         Alternative narrow  frequency range with strong absorption, or less absorption due to a wide frequency range.

Pretended Disadvantages:

  • No pollution of the holes. The vibrating air column in the absorption hole leads to cleaning.
  • No worse acoustic shielding. The small holes are causing a low circulation, which is minimally reducing the heat passing, instead of increasing.

The microperforation is calculable

The efficiency of the microperforation is calculable in advance, which is difficult with other principles. The frequency is affected by the perforated part, the thickness as well as the diameter of the holes.

The sound absorption is ensured by friction at the boundary layers of the holes and the hole edge. The air velocity will be increased therefore the holes will be cleaned.
